What an MCP server is, explained for resellers

A plain-English guide to MCP, the standard that lets ChatGPT, Claude, and other AI assistants work inside your reselling tools, and what to check before you connect one.

You may have seen “MCP” next to apps you already use, or heard that ChatGPT has plugins and Claude has connectors. They are all the same idea: a way for an AI assistant to reach into another app, look things up, and do work there when you ask.

For a reseller, that is the difference between an assistant that writes a description you copy somewhere and an assistant that can save the listing, check it against eBay, and update your inventory.

The short version

MCP stands for Model Context Protocol. It is an open standard, like a universal plug, that lets an AI assistant connect to an app. The app runs an MCP server: a list of actions the assistant is allowed to take, such as “find items” or “create a listing”, plus the rules for each one.

Each assistant has its own name for these connections. ChatGPT calls them plugins and Claude calls them connectors. Other assistants are adding support under their own names. Underneath, one MCP server can work with all of them.

What changes when your assistant can reach your inventory

Without a connection, an assistant only knows what you paste into the chat. It cannot see your items, save anything, or talk to a marketplace. You do the copying, the category hunting, and the double entry.

With a connection, you can ask in plain words and the assistant does the steps through the app. “What from Saturday’s estate sale isn’t listed yet?” becomes a real search of your inventory. “Get the Canon ready for eBay at $120” becomes a verified eBay preview.

  • Your assistant works with your real records instead of a pasted copy.
  • Results come back as cards with photos and buttons, in assistants that support them.
  • Everything it changes shows up in the app too, because it is the same account.

Five questions to ask before you connect one

Connecting a tool to an assistant gives that assistant access to your account. A well-built connection makes the risky steps hard to do by accident. Before you connect any reseller tool, check these.

  • Does anything public, like a live listing, need your own press or confirmation?
  • Do you sign in with the app’s own login (OAuth), so you never paste a password into the chat?
  • Does it see only your account, and can you disconnect it anytime?
  • Does it keep buyer names, addresses, and messages out of the chat?
  • Does it tell you clearly what it will not do, such as listing prohibited items?

How Shelvio’s MCP server works

Shelvio runs one MCP server at https://api.shelvio.ai/mcp. You sign in with your Shelvio account and approve access, and the assistant can then create listings from photos, edit them, search and update your inventory, record listings and sales on eBay, Poshmark, Mercari, Facebook Marketplace, Depop, and Etsy, connect eBay, and prepare eBay listings.

Publishing to eBay takes your press of List on eBay in Shelvio’s preview card, which works once per preview. Your assistant is set up to check with you before it changes a live price or ends a listing. Shelvio does not pass along buyer data, and it does not look up or suggest prices in chat; the price is yours.

You do not need to remember any of this to use it. Connect once, then talk to your assistant like you would talk to a helper who knows every item in your Shelvio inventory.

Questions about this workflow

Is MCP safe?

MCP is a way to connect; how safe a connection is depends on how the app built it. Look for app sign-in instead of passwords, confirmation before anything public or permanent, and access limited to your own account.

Do I need to be technical to use an MCP server?

No. In ChatGPT or Claude you paste one web address, sign in, and approve. After that you just chat. The technical details matter only if you are building your own agent.

Can one MCP server work in more than one assistant?

Yes. That is the point of the standard. Shelvio’s one server works in ChatGPT and Claude today, with more assistants in preparation, and your items are the same everywhere.
